Name of the student educators program (1st program):
Sustainability Internship Program

A brief description of the student educators program (1st program):
We typically have 8-10 student sustainability interns and one funded MS student. Peer education and outreach across campus is their main responsibilities. The interns work 6-10 hours per week through the semester while the funded MS student works 20 hours. Their tasks change based on the skill sets of the individual student and the priorities of the campus sustainability committee. Some examples of some of the activities they have carried out recently include distributing recycling information to all incoming and current students, going door to door training campus apartment residents about food waste collection, teaching proper waste separation in-person to students in the dining halls, coordinating sustainability events/programs throughout the academic year, outreach for our campus move-out program (promoted to off-campus students as well), improving biodiversity on campus by inviting students to work on grounds (planting wildflowers, removing invasive species, planting trees), leading food waste audits, and coordinating the Knight Rider Bike rental program which is promoted to all students.

The sustainability interns are trained by the sustainability staff in the office as well as trained by the current/senior interns. This allows students to learn about the projects and programs from multiple perspectives and gain a more holistic and broad knowledge.

Food to Energy Project

A brief description of the student educators program (2nd program):
Students enroll in a course (MP210) that is part of a project on campus called the Food to Energy Project. Along with creating and implementing lessons on food waste in local middle and high schools, students enrolled in the course also work to educate the Clarkson and local community about the problem with food waste and solutions to it. In the Spring of 2021, students in the class specifically focused on creating instagram posts, buttons, brochures and a survey to understand student knowledge on food waste. The students also helped organize two events that educated the student body, one with the help of the Residential Life on campus and another at an Open House event.
