BU Wind

A brief description of the institution’s featured program, initiative, or accomplishment:
As part of our Climate Action Plan, BU is matching 100% of our electricity needs with new renewable resources. BU purchases electricity from 48.6 MW of wind generation capacity annually through a 15-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with ENGIE North America from a wind farm in South Dakota. This one project reduces our carbon emissions by 53% and gets us closer to our goal of carbon neutrality by 2040.

Zero Waste Plan

A brief description of the second program/initiative/accomplishment:
BU's Zero Waste Plan was developed by a 54-member task force during the fall of 2019, and released on March 3, 2021. Hundreds of BU faculty, staff, and students helped shape the plan through participation in forums, surveys, and more. The Plan outlines 21 different initiatives that focus on various important aspects of Zero Waste: redesign, reduce, reuse, recycle/compost, culture change, and market development.

Resident Sustainability Leaders

A brief description of the third program/initiative/accomplishment:
The Resident Sustainability Leaders (RSL) promote sustainability in student housing and provide support to residents on sustainability subjects such as waste reduction, recycling, and energy and water conservation.

While part of the Sustainability team, RSLs also partner with Residence Life, including Resident Assistants (RAs) and Residence Hall Councils (RHCs) to make sustainability a way of life in BU residence halls.
