Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Yale Healthy Furniture Initiative
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
We convened a cross-departmental committee in order to update the university’s building standards and procurement recommendations to eliminate flame retardants and chemicals of concern from purchased furniture. The key takeaway is that modifying our furniture specifications improved the health and well-being of building occupants and saved the university money on purchased furniture while complying with life safety fire code.
We started by looking at specs for furniture for capital projects, and procurement worked with vendors on identifying our preferences. We also worked closely with procurement and the change management team on creating a strategy for educating university buyers on options.
