List and description of the institution’s sustainability-focused degrees, certificates, and majors for undergraduate students:

Economics, Sustainability, and Society major - The Economics, Sustainability, and Society program focuses on balancing the demands of the present without compromising future needs all within the context of our increasingly complex, inter-related global economy. Students acquire a comprehensive understanding of sustainable economies, including the study of natural resources, plus ecological and environmental problems. Students also gain an understanding of social justice questions related to the distribution of economic products and resources.

The ECOS program integrates economic analysis with cultural studies, global economic development, policy studies, management and ethics. The results are a graduate with the ability to conceptualize and solve sustainability problems. Far more than just theoretical, the ECOS program includes real world experiential learning elements such as field trips, practicums and internships all culminating in an integrative capstone with hands-on projects. And while sustainability issues continue to evolve, it's equally certain that the demand will grow for people committed to environmental stewardship and skilled in analyzing economic sustainability solutions.

 

Environmental Science major - Whether it's examining global climate change or researching tropical deforestation, environmental scientists take steps to help make the world a more sustainable place. As a student in the environmental science major, you’ll explore conservation topics while studying how humans interact with the natural environment.

The environmental science curriculum is interdisciplinary, so you’ll be taking courses in a variety of fields including biology, chemistry, geography, economics, physics, political science, philosophy and ethics. You'll also gain real-world experience through interning at places like the National Park Service, the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Science Foundation or private companies and nonprofits focused on environmental issues.

 

Environmental Science, Environmental Management major - The Environmental Science with a concentration in Environmental Management program combines an undergraduate bachelor of science with graduate programs in the Duke University School of the Environment. Students are accepted into one of two Duke University graduate programs after completion of undergraduate coursework at Xavier: The Master of Forestry (MF) or the Master of Environmental Management (MEM). The curriculum consists of six semesters of undergraduate study at Xavier and four semesters of graduate study at Duke.

Environmental Studies minor - The environmental studies minor is a 16-hour, interdisciplinary program compatible with any major. It offers students an integrated overview of the environmental and natural-resource fields, and provides a foundation for anyone interested in working in related fields. The program encompasses courses from a wide variety of academic departments, including biology, economics, English, history, politics and theology. Courses explore such areas as: the scientific fundamentals of environmental issues, potential economic and political solutions to environmental issues. environmental perspectives from diverse vantage points.

 

Peace Studies minor - 

The environmental studies minor is a 16-hour, interdisciplinary program compatible with any major. It offers students an integrated overview of the environmental and natural-resource fields, and provides a foundation for anyone interested in working in related fields. The program encompasses courses from a wide variety of academic departments, including biology, economics, English, history, politics and theology. Courses explore such areas as: the scientific fundamentals of environmental issues, potential economic and political solutions to environmental issues, environmental perspectives from diverse vantage points.
