A brief description of programs, policies, infrastructure investments, outreach efforts, and/or other factors that contributed to the diversion rate for construction and demolition waste:
For the WPI Foisie Innovation Studio and Messenger residence hall, Shawmut Constr. was made aware of the projects landfill diversion goals early in the process by the client and design team.  Understanding these goals, we developed two separate waste management plans.  The first planned involved how to divert as much material from a landfill during the demolition process.  This entailed separating materials on site and recycling brick, concrete, steel as on site separated materials. These materials were then able to be sent direct to recyclers. The second plan involved diverting as much material from landfills during the construction process.  For this, we partnered with Waste Management to sort the construction waste at their facility.  The combined efforts allowed for only 8 tons of construction waste to be landfilled as part of the construction process.
