In the last 10 years, all new construction and major renovation projects on campus either pursue LEED or Living Building Challenge certification - with the exception of the CDE building which pursued ILFI Zero Energy Certification. Both LEED and LBC have guidelines that encourage or require 75-100% of construction and demolition waste be recycled or salvaged. Diversion is looked at through a project-by-project basis. Certain sustainability goals like LEED require diversion or reclamation.
Williams often saves roof slate or wood framing and donates any old furniture. Concrete is also oftentimes crushed and used for road bedding.
Additionally, the college is in the midst of zero waste planning, a key component of which is to develop a surplus property management and storage to solution to further support diversion through reuse and donation.
