Williams College is a residential college with >95% of students living in residential housing on campus and commuting primarily by foot, bike, and other non-motorized means to their classes and activities. Students are allowed to have vehicles on campus after their first year and many do. Some fraction of students live off campus and/or use cars to get to campus, internship and other educational activities.

A brief description of the method(s) used to gather data about employee commuting:
A transportation modal split survey was conducted among faculty and staff in February 2021 with a 44% response rate. Respondents provided data for 2305 commutes to/from Williams College, of which 517, or 22.4%, used more sustainable commuting options.

The commute modal split survey was created in Qualtrics and open to faculty and staff from 2/7/22 through 2/21/22. A total of 502 people responded and provided data on 2,305 round-trip commute trips. Shares of transportation modes were calculated as # trips taken with a given transportation mode / # trips (=2,305).
