Cool Food Pledge
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
The Cool Food Pledge (CFP) is an initiative started by the World Research Institute in the fall of 2018 to address and decrease greenhouse gas emissions through food. Signatories from many different sectors, pledge to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) emissions by 25% by 2030. Williams is one of the few educational institutions who have signed the pledge along with Harvard University, University of Maryland, and the University of Pittsburgh. Other members include IKEA, Panera Bread, the city of Milan, Morgan Stanley, Seattle Children’s Hospital, and many more.
Cool Food Pledge (CFP) focuses on tracking the total GHG emissions associated with foods purchased through an institution's Dining Services. CFP and the World Research Institute use their Cool Food Calculator to estimate these emissions and participating institutions create a plan to reduce impact by 2030.
Williams College signed on to this commitment, is in the process of collecting and submitting food procurement data for all Dining Services' purchased food from FY18 through FY21, and participates in regular webinars and working group sessions with member organizations. The Zilkha Center for Environmental Initiatives and Dining Services will be working together in the spring of 2022 to plan for the interventions to decrease the college's carbon footprint when it comes to food.
