A copy of the institution's definition of sustainability research:
By sustainability we mean the ability of physical, biological, economic, social, and/or cultural systems to interact with the environment in ways that can endure for long periods of time, without diminishment of environmental quality or the ability of future generations to meet their needs.
Sustainability related research may have as its central, core organizing principle the exploration of sustainability, or unsustainability, in particular systems or as concepts. It may also explore a single sustainability principle or issue, but may not have that as its central question, or it may concentrate on one system or technology related to sustainability.
