Appendix A – Methodologies and Assumptions
Margin of Error
To calculate margin of error, the following assumptions must be made:
First, it is assumed that the survey is a random sampling of staff, and that there have not been any inherent biases in survey responses. This is a larger assumption to make, as employees who already use sustainable modes of transportation are more likely to complete the survey. Thus, the margin of error cannot account for a slight bias towards non-drivers. The wording of survey outreach materials is designed to cater to all modes of transportation and remain neutral to eliminate as much bias as possible.
Second, it is important to understand that travel patters can fluctuate. The results received are representative of a particular point in time and will not always match observable commuting patterns (explained further below).
Finally, it is possible to measure margin of error for a given employer size using the Slovin’s formula:
