Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
International Students Overcoming War
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
ISOW (International Students Overcoming War) is a student-led and student-funded humanitarian initiative that partners with Wilfrid Laurier University and NGO organizations to provide full scholarships to students whose lives and educational opportunities have been negatively impacted by conflict. At present the ISOW Management Team consists of twenty student volunteers from Arts, Science and the LSBE. The structure of the management team is the first of its kind both at Laurier and amongst Canadian universities. We currently sponsor and support fourteen international scholars from Syria, Lebanon and Egypt. Through their involvement with ISOW, student leaders have professional development opportunities through project-based learning. This fits very nicely with the Laurier's commitment to experiential learning. These opportunities include working closely with senior university administrators, job shadowing university staff, managing partnership relationships with NGOs, and administering the ISOW Scholarship. Over the last four years these student leaders have successfully implemented and sustained a unique scholarship initiative that offers these students unique leadership opportunities to improve their university campus community.
