A brief description of any internal sustainability professional development and training opportunities that the institution makes available to staff:
Sustainability Certificate Launched in 2017, Laurier offers a Certificate in Sustainability for faculty and staff that participate in our "Lunch and Learn" workshop series. The goal of the program is to increase employee literacy and awareness on global-to-local sustainability topics as well as to encourage behavior/culture change through the increased use of on-campus programs and services.Workshops include topics on carpooling and alternative transportation, water footprints, food sustainability, recycling and reuse, and more. Successful completion of the program requires attendance at a minimum of five workshops and the completion of a sustainability quiz. Staff Development Trainings: Food Services Staff are provided with training on a variety of items including Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, property waste reduction and waste management practices (recycling and composting) and operational training specific to the location they are working in. They also receive training on Laurier's eco-container and travel mug discount programs. Smart about Salt Training discusses alternative methods and salt conservation involved with winter snow and ice maintenance. Lawn and Garden Irrigation Conservation Trained in a system that can be used by staff to control the water usage around campus with smartphones. Phones can control everything including water usage during heat waves and decrease of usage during cooler temperatures and rainfall. It also will be able to isolate and shut down a zone if there’s a break in the line of damage to a sprinkler head which will decrease the water usage. Intercultural Certificate The Intercultural Certificate strives to support participants' development of intercultural skills, knowledge and attitudes that stimulate a commitment to lifelong learning and strengthen their ability to support and understand a globally diverse world.
