A brief description of how and when the cultural assessment(s) were developed and/or adopted:

The Sustainability Action Plan survey was developed in 2016 to determine the values and priorities of the Laurier community for sustainability on campus. This information was used to guide the development of the current action plan.

In 2019, a follow up survey is scheduled to see how cultural values on campus have changed following the release of our Sustainability Action Plan in 2018.

All members of the Laurier community on the Brantford and Waterloo campuses were given the opportunity to participate.


A brief summary of results from the cultural assessment, including a description of any measurable changes over time:

Results from the survey showed that 75% of respondents were undergraduate students while 23% were staff members. 100% of respondents indicated that they believed it was important to live in a sustainable way. 95% of respondents said that they believed a more sustainable campus and community added to their personal health and well being, demonstrating the importance of the survey and efforts on campus.

The areas of sustainability that the Laurier community believed are the 4 most important to prioritize starting with the most important are, respectively: Waste, energy, water and campus engagement.

The most felt barrier to living sustainably in the Laurier community was "Sustainable alternatives are too expensive", followed by "sustainable alternatives are not close at hand or accessible to me" and "I'm too busy/don't have enough time to seek out alternatives".
