Wellness Education:
As a compliment to the wellness programming offered through Mosiac, Wilfrid Laurier University’s employee assistance program provider, the Human Resources department has offered a variety of personal wellness themed “lunch & learn” seminars during the 2009-2010 academic year. The content was themed around the concept of ‘Taking Care of You’ and offered a variety of educational opportunities that allowed staff and faculty to explore the many facets of their own personal well-being. Lunch and Learn topics included: personal financial planning, retirement planning, pension planning, back basics, how to fit exercise into your busy life, personal ergonomics, eat this not that, hold the salt, nutrition myths and truths, label reading. In addition, in conjunction with staff at the Athletics complex, we staff and faculty yoga – a noon hour program that offers the ability for staff/faculty-only classes focused on flexibility and meditation.

Diversity Education:
As part of the Human Resources department certificate program offering, Communicating for Service Excellence, a workshop is included entitled: Embracing Diversity: Effective Communication Across Cultures. The certificate program is part of an open-enrolment offering and is available for all staff levels. In this workshop you will learn more about culture, both your own, and that of others. Through simulation exercises, discussions and case studies, you will experience first-hand how culture influences our way of thinking and how it affects behaviour. You will become more sensitive towards diversity and develop strategies on how to interact more effectively with people from different cultures. It is the goal of this workshop to enable participants to turn confusion and frustration based on cultural differences into mutual respect and understanding.
