A brief description of the snow and ice removal program, policy, or practice:
Waterloo Campus:
Parking and Transportation Resources is responsible for the snow and ice removal of campus parking lots. The hired contractor uses alternative materials to road salt to remove snow and ice, therefore minimizing damage to the water table. In addition, rather than having large vehicles haul the snow off campus to a facility, snow is stored on campus as much as possible in order to avoid additional emissions from the transportation of the snow.
Grounds Services is responsible for snow and ice removal of campus walkways. They are committed to salt management and have implemented the following practices into winter maintenance operations:
• Assess operational practices and site characteristics to identify improvements.
• Track and report the materials applied application rates, and weather conditions.
• Incorporate the Region of Waterloo Smart about Salt Program into snow removal practices.
• Train staff in salt and ice management.
Brantford Campus:
The City of Brantford is responsible for snow and ice removal of all roads and parking lots on campus.
Faculties Support is responsible for snow and ice removal of University owned sidewalks and steps. They use an environmentally friendly deicer to keep environmental impacts to a minimum. It is also common practice to keep the use of salting agents to a minimum.
