As of February 2019, Western's Sustainability, Equity, and Justice Fund Grant Program (formerly the Sustainable Action Fund Grant Program) has awarded over $1,200,000 in grants to student-led teams through the implementation of 60 individual projects. This student fee-funded grant-awarding program provides a means for students to collaborate and innovate to improve our community and campus. The program is both co-curricular and interdisciplinary; students, faculty, and staff from every college in the university have contributed to projects. Participating students develop grant writing and project management skills as the steward their concepts to approval and execution. Since its inauguration, the grant award program has funded projects have brought internationally-recognized speakers to campus, funded sustainability-focused staff-positions, and installed new health facilities and energy-saving technology on campus. Some topics addressed by the projects have been environmental justice, waste, water, women's health and safety, economic systems, recreation, social equity, education, food production and distribution, people of color in the environmental movement, alternative transportation, agriculture systems, local foods, and aquaponics.
