Qualified students are able to give tours to those interested in Western Technical College’s Passive House. Students are informed about the cutting edge technology used in the home. The Passive House’s design and construction model focuses on a variety of sustainability and energy efficient systems.

Student educators are chosen by their professors. Students who have worked on the home themselves and understand the systems employed in the home can give the educational tours.


A brief description of the formal training that the student educators receive (1st program):

Students learn about the Passive House through course work. Professors then go over some of the key feature of the home individually with the students and inform the students about recently asked questions.

No financial assistance is necessary.

This program facilitates an open communication from Resident Assistants to students about sustainability. Resident Assistants teach their residents about energy conservation and how to cut back on their personal usage. Each Residence hall compete against one another in which hall can consume the least amount of energy.

All Resident Assistants are chosen to participate in this sustainability education program.


A brief description of the formal training that the student educators receive (2nd program):

Resident Assistants are trained by the sustainability department on the information they will need to teach students, as well as how to engage the students on these topics. It is important that they are able to have an open communication with their residents about sustainability topics.

Financial support is provided in the form of small prizes for the Residence Hall which conserves the most energy.

Green enterprise in all of its many aspects will be a major component of future economic development – in Wisconsin, the nation and around the globe.
Much of the world is now in the early stages of an historic transition. A transition from economies that accommodate far too much waste and inefficiency and depend too much on fossil fuels to systems that are much more conserving, efficient and sustainable. The Sustainability Summit and Exposition recognizes unprecedented opportunities and encourages investment and development in the green sector. We highlight Energy, Water, Lifestyle, Business and Workforce

Students interested in sustainability were offered the opportunity to attend the summit.

Students were able to choose to participate in break-out sessions that most interested them. These sessions highlighted energy, water, lifestyle, business and workforce.

Western's Sustainability Department paid for the fee of the summit and rented a bus to transport students.
