Does the institution advocate for public policies that support campus sustainability or that otherwise advance sustainability at the municipal/local level?:
Yes

A brief description of how the institution engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability at the municipal/local level:

The One Valley Leadership Council (OVLC) is a collaborative initiative focused on achieving a more prosperous and successful future for all citizens in the Gunnison valley. Western participates in the council, with one of the Vice Presidents representing the Board of Trustees and the president of the university. A new Gunnison County Climate Change Mitigation Plan was released in 2021, which includes a 50% GHG reduction by 2030. The Western VP serving on the council was instrumental in adding carbon footprint reduction goals to the initiative. This is a collaborative effort that sets goals for the city and county, brining local governments and businesses together. OVLC specifically promotes policy options for buildings and transportation and the VP has support from the Board of Trustees and the president. (see PPT)
