Brooke Moran emailed Chairs asking them to respond with tallies for their departments. She never heard from any Chairs, so she inventoried departments she was familiar with (ROE, ESS/HAEP, ENVS/MEM, BIO), and then made a conservative guess re: the number of faculty conducting research.
