The Office for Sustainability
The mission of the Office for Sustainability is to guide and assist the Western Michigan University community in fulfilling and growing its sustainability commitments. Through building a diverse and flourishing learning community around sustainability, we will continually explore and develop new opportunities to create a culture of sustainability and improve quality of life for all.

Recognition and Office for Sustainability (OfS) Transparency:
Experiential Learning:
- Held the annual Sustainability Celebration and continued our Event Series; recent events included a Sustainability Slam and visiting lecturers David Clark and Rob Riordan.
- Co-designed, built-out, initiated programming, and gave over 100 tours in OfS building and Studio including the Gibbs House site, a 2-acre permaculture demonstration site.
- Supported 5 students attending two leading national campus sustainability conferences (3 gave presentations).
- Conducted annual Student Sustainability Survey, participation increased to ~1,800 participants.
Academic and Administrative Initiatives:
- Worked with the Associate Provost for Institutional Effectiveness to support AASHE STARS self-study.
- Led the President’s Universitywide Sustainability Committee.
Operational Initiatives:
- Conducted and reported on a new Greenhouse Gas Inventory.
- Switched to single-stream recycling campus-wide.
Research, Program, and Community Partnership Development:
- Completed White Papers and Project Reports (e.g., Tobacco Free Campus and Bikeshare).
- Continued buildout of Gibbs House property, following master plan with permaculture research, education, and leadership development features. Developed more programming for visiting students and increased signage and self-guided tour operations.
- Sustainability Champions program to highlight community and campus innovators.
-Power Purchase Agreement luncheons with Inovateus Solar. 30 guests joined technologists and industry leaders to discuss energy futures.
