A brief description of the incentives to encourage the authorship, peer review, and/or adoption of open access textbooks:
In Fall 2020, WKU began the Affordable Textbook Initiative. The goal of this program is to make course materials available at no cost to WKU students by incentivizing faculty adoption of Open Educational Resources or library-licensed materials in place of traditional textbooks. Open Educational Resources (OER) are free and openly licensed educational materials that can be used for teaching, learning, research, and other purposes. These resources offer a strategy for lowering barriers to student academic success, specifically by ensuring all students have access to course materials. The program includes a competitive $1,500 grant awarded to faculty who adopt an affordable textbook alternative.
