A brief description of how the institution ensures compliance with sustainable building operation and maintenance guidelines and policies:
The WKU Energy Policy, adopted in 2009, commits to LEED standards for all new construction and renovation. It also outlines policy for energy efficiency and conservation in existing buildings, including temperature setbacks, Energy Star for electronics and appliances, and conservation strategies for building occupants.
A Stormwater Quality Management plan supports efforts to minimize impacts on surrounding site, as does a Tree Care Management Plan that protects trees.
New water efficient plumbing fixtures recently installed in all campus buildings, and "smart" irrigation system and rainwater collection cisterns support conservation in water consumption.
The Indoor Air Quality program supports indoor environmental quality, as does our use of low VOC paints and finishes and green cleaning supplies.
While we make effort to use environmentally preferable materials, such as recycled content materials, low VOC paints and Green Seal certified cleaning products, these are not necessarily policies but informal guidelines and commitments adopted by the associated departments (custodial services, for example, has committed to using green cleaning supplies when available).
