WVU defines sustainability as meeting the needs of today without jeopardizing the future. WVU acknowledges the three pillars of sustainability which are environmental performance, economic prosperity, and social responsibility; and is committed to support, advance, practice, and promote sustainability in its pursuit of leadership and prominence in research, teaching, and service; stewardship of institutional resources and services; and relationship with the local community, state, nation, and beyond. In 2007, Narvel G. Weese Jr., former Vice President of Administration & Finance signed the WVU sustainability position statement linked and attached below.

While the WVU Provost Office has created the highest guiding document, the university does not have a formalize strategic plan because President E. Gordon Gee believes in strategic action and taking advantage of what happens in the moment. To learn more about his viewpoint, visit
