A brief description of the institution’s formal participatory or shared governance bodies:

West Chester University operates with a model of shared governance in many areas of university administration and planning. A Student Government Association gives students a voice to "provide a unified and responsible government that will promote the welfare and growth of students" (https://www.wcupa.edu/_services/STU/sga/). One of eleven seats on the university's Council of Trustees is reserved for a student (voting) member. Faculty participate in academic and other aspects of university planning through a Faculty Senate (https://www.wcupa.edu/_facstaff/facultySenate/) and through the Curriculum and Academic Policies Council (https://www.wcupa.edu/viceProvost/capc/default.aspx). Non-academic staff participate in governance via four unions (AFSCME, OPEIU, SCUPA, and SPFPA) and a Non-Represented Managers Association.

WCU participates with officials from the Borough of West Chester in the "Borough University Officials Group" (BUOG). The BUOG meets approximately on a quarterly basis to “(1) Strengthen communications, understanding& opportunities for mutual cooperation between WCB and WCU officials through direct dialogue and(2) Discuss issues which may affect both the Borough and University, from a strategic, philosophical and/or conceptual perspective."
