A brief description of the institution’s professional development opportunities on sustainability in the curriculum:

The Brandywine Project Faculty Sustainability Workshop is held bi-annually at West Chester University, most recently in January, 2020, and is organized by members of WCU's Sustainability Council Committee on Teaching, Learning, and Curriculum. For the January 2020 workshop, faculty from West Chester University and neighboring communities were invited to participate in the 3rd Brandywine Faculty Workshop, an opportunity to develop or modify courses to focus on issues of sustainability, surrounded by supportive and creative colleagues from our region. Named after the Brandywine Creek watershed, WCU's workshop innovates by comprehensively integrating the local and global with the social, economic, and environmental aspects of sustainability. Novel workshop sessions included: the global context for higher education and sustainability (including the UN Sustainable Development Goals); social justice and sustainability; integrating whole campus immersive learning into the classroom; and best practices for teaching sustainability from students and faculty. The workshop provided the opportunity to learn or deepen understanding by further exploring a discipline, create interdisciplinary connections, and become more informed about campus and regional sustainability actions & opportunities for teaching. Participants left the workshop ready to infuse sustainability knowledge and practices into their own courses and to inspire their students and colleagues to grow a culture of sustainability at their universities and beyond. The workshop occurred on Tuesday and Wednesday, January 14 and 15, 2020 in WCU's Philips Memorial Hall Autograph Library. Of 26 attendees, 20 were full- or part-time WCU faculty members, 5 were from other universities (Washington College, Penn State Abington, and Millersville University) and 1 was an unaffiliated instructor.
