Has the institution conducted a GHG emissions inventory within the previous three years that includes all Scope 1 and 2 emissions? :
Yes

A copy of the most recent GHG emissions inventory:
A brief description of the methodology and/or tool used to complete the GHG emissions inventory:

Wesleyan uses SIMAP to calculate its greenhouse gas emissions inventory; the inventory is calculated internally by Wesleyan's Facilities Business Manager.

Has the GHG emissions inventory been validated internally by personnel who are independent of the GHG accounting and reporting process and/or verified by an independent, external third party?:
No

A brief description of the GHG inventory verification process:
---

Documentation to support the GHG inventory verification process:
---

Gross Scope 1 GHG emissions, performance year:
Weight in MTCO2e
Stationary combustion 16,833 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Other sources (mobile combustion, process emissions, fugitive emissions) 254 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

Total gross Scope 1 GHG emissions, performance year:
17,087 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

Gross Scope 2 GHG emissions, performance year (market-based):
Weight in MTCO2e
Imported electricity 0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Imported thermal energy 0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

Total gross Scope 2 GHG emissions, performance year:
0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

Gross GHG emissions from biogenic sources, performance year:
0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

Does the GHG emissions inventory include Scope 3 emissions from the following sources?:
Yes or No Weight in MTCO2e
Business travel Yes 1,583 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Commuting Yes 957 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Purchased goods and services Yes 35 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Capital goods No ---
Fuel- and energy-related activities not included in Scope 1 or Scope 2 Yes 81 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Waste generated in operations Yes 595 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Other sources Yes 571 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

Total Scope 3 GHG emissions, performance year:
3,822 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

A brief description of how the institution accounted for its Scope 3 emissions:

Scope 3 emissions (other) is study abroad GHGs.

Commuting data is estimated based on zip codes, past surveys, and work-from-home data.
Employee business travel is extrapolated from spend on air and ground travel.
Study abroad air travel is extrapolated based on country visited (calculate RT emissions to largest city in that country).

Solid waste, wastewater, paper purchasing, and T&D loss emissions are all direct calculations.

Has the institution completed an inventory within the previous three years to quantify its air pollutant emissions?:
Yes

Annual weight of emissions for::
Weight of Emissions
Nitrogen oxides (NOx) 15.57 Tons
Sulfur oxides (SOx) 0.63 Tons
Carbon monoxide (CO) 9.39 Tons
Particulate matter (PM) 3.65 Tons
Ozone (O3) 0 Tons
Lead (Pb) 0 Tons
Hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) 0.21 Tons
Ozone-depleting compounds (ODCs) 0 Tons
Other standard categories of air emissions identified in permits and/or regulations 3.50 Tons

Do the air pollutant emissions figures provided include the following sources?:
Yes or No
Major stationary sources Yes
Area sources Yes
Mobile sources No
Commuting No
Off-site electricity production Yes

A brief description of the methodology(ies) the institution used to complete its air emissions inventory:

Wesleyan has inventoried every piece of fossil fuel burning equipment on campus. Equipment is grouped based on its capacity and type of fuel and emissions calculations, following EPA prescribed processes. These processes are performed for each group of equipment. Emissions calculations are maintained on a rolling 12 month period. The data above is from the most recent year collected, ending in September 2021.

For stationary air emissions, we do not record ozone as a pollutant. PM includes PM 2.5 and PM 10. HAPs include benzene, dichlorobenzene, formaldehyde, hexane, naphthalene, toluene, ethyl benzene, xylene, acrolein, methanol, and styrene. The only ODC Wesleyan includes in its air inventory is carbon tetrachloride. Our "other" category is VOCs.

Data source(s) and notes about the submission:

For stationary air emissions, we do not record ozone as a pollutant. PM values include PM-2.5 (1.667 tons) and PM-10 (1.98 tons). HAPs include benzene, dichlorobenzene, formaldehyde, hexane, naphthalene, toluene, xylene, propylene, butadiene, acetaldehyde, acrolein, styrene, and methanol. Our "other" category is VOCs. The data represented for stationary sources is for calendar year 2021.
