Has the institution made a formal commitment to provide a living wage to its student employees and/or graduate teaching/research assistants (e.g. by adopting a student bill-of-rights)?:
No

A brief description of the institution’s commitment to a student living wage:

Wesleyan’s undergraduate population is nearly 100% traditional; nearly all undergraduate students are required to live on campus. Financial aid funding is provided based upon financial need to cover cost of attendance expenses. Students receiving need-based financial aid ordinarily are awarded institutional or federal work-study funding as part of their financial aid package. The minimum wage in CT has increased 22% over a three-year period, from $8.70/hr to $10.10/hr. The work-study allotment has remained constant during this time, meaning students with financial need are required to work fewer hours. All remaining need for high need students is met with scholarship support.

Our graduate/teaching research assistants receive competitive stipend pay. Wesleyan has not adopted a graduate student bill-of-rights, but Wesleyan has made an informal commitment to providing a living wage to graduate/teaching research assistants. In 2012 Wesleyan began using the affordable housing guidelines of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development as a guiding benchmark. Corrective measures were taken -- graduate housing costs were fixed for a time and graduate stipends increased by greater than 5% per year for several years. The current annual graduate stipend level is $30,570 (competitive with graduate schools in our geographic area) and university housing is on average of 32% of annual grad income.
