A brief description of how sustainability is included prominently in new student orientation :
As part of the New Student Orientation Program (NSO) Weber State University offers an event, the Weber Welcome, that is available for all new and transfer students. During this event the NSO program hosts a one hour tour where the Orientation Leaders take students on a campus tour in which sustainability is included as a prominent theme. Students are told about the University's goal to be carbon neutral by the year 2040 and they are provided with details about the sustainability features on campus and in the buildings they visit.
The NSO Program is part of the Student Success Center which is an active member of WSU's Green Department Certification Program. As a Green Department member, the NSO program recently completed a review of its practices and made two significant sustainability-related changes that impact orientation; they now administer electronic surveys instead of using hard-copies and they provide all students with reusable cups and straws instead of plastic water bottles.
