A brief description of the methodology the institution followed to complete the research inventory:
A survey was sent out in October and November 2021 to all faculty on campus via Qualtrics regarding their sustainability teaching, research and departmental learning outcomes. Responses were collected electronically.
The definition of sustainability research, as defined by STARS - “research and scholarship that explicitly addresses the concept of sustainability, furthers our understanding of the interdependence of ecological and social/economic systems, or has a primary and explicit focus on a major sustainability challenge," was provided on the survey.
Faculty reported here as engaged in sustainability research includes respondents who answered "Yes" to this question:
"Does any of your research or scholarship explicitly address sustainability and/or further our understanding of the interconnectedness of social, economic and environmental issues?"
AND
provided some description of their research/scholarship topics and/or specific projects in this realm.
Please note, there are additional faculty who indicated they did sustainability research, but they did not provide any further details. These faculty were not included in the count here (as is noted on the inventory spreadsheet). Consequently our total number of faculty engaged in sustainability scholarship is likely undercounted. More work needs to be done.
Additional faculty were added to the inventory who are known to be engaged in sustainability research, but had not completed the survey. Information on their work was gathered through a review of relevant departmental websites and faculty profiles.
