The Chair of Washington University's Urban Design program, John Hoal, along with urban design faculty member Derek Hoeferlin, lead STUDIO MISI-ZIIBI, a highly-specialized, multi-disciplinary design and planning team formed to address the particular and complex challenge of restoring the Mississippi River Delta natural deltaic functions in times of climate change. STUDIO MISI-ZIIBI submitted their ground-breaking work to the Changing Course competition and were selected as one of three winning teams. Our office staff attends regular steering committee meetings and events as part of the St. Louis Higher Education Sustainability Consortium, provides leadership within the group, and exchanges ideas and best practices with members. Our team also regularly connects with businesses and institutions in the St. Louis region and throughout the US to share best-practices on a host of topics, including bottled water bans, sustainability planning, and carbon reduction strategies.

A brief description of the peer review activities:

Washington University is partnering with the region's metropolitan planning organization, East-West Gateway Council of Governments, as well as St. Louis University, Webster University, Maryville University, and the University of Missouri St. Louis to develop metrics and targets to advance and expand the St. Louis region's sustainability plan: OneSTL. This highly collaborative effort has created a platform where multiple higher education institutions and other regional partners are reviewing sustainability metrics and targets from each institution, as well as best practices from throughout the US, to guide the development of a shared set of targets and metrics for the St. Louis region.

Yes

A brief description of other collaborative efforts around sustainability during the previous year:

Washington University has been partnering with Middle East Technical University, IIT Bombay, The Technion, and the University of Queensland to plan a global solar photovoltaic testing facility. The facility would provide a global platform for testing new and emerging solar technologies in a broad range of climatic zones throughout the world.
