In-house and out-sourced janitorial staff purchase and use Green Seal certified products throughout the university's campuses, as per the Green Cleaning Policy and Plan. In a small number of instances, the janitorial team will use cleaning products that are not Green Seal certified to achieve the desired cleaning result. An approved product list is available; all other products must be submitted for approval prior to use.

The Green Cleaning Policy and Plan also addresses purchasing sustainable cleaning equipment, guidelines for handling cleaning chemicals, standard operating procedures for effective cleaning, staff and employee training, and collecting occupant feedback

A brief description of the energy management or benchmarking program:

Washington University installed an extensive energy sub-metering system between 2010 and 2015, adding approximately 800 meters. The metering system has allowed the University to benchmark campus buildings against one another and against nationally published benchmarking data. The benchmarking process has allowed us to identify high EUI buildings that have been prioritized for a major retrocommissioning program. In addition, the university's maintenance and operations staff receive regular training and support to engage in ongoing commissioning of buildings.

Washington University also participates in national building energy benchmarking through Energy STAR Portfolio Manager. Washington University has uploaded monthly energy use data for over 150 buildings beginning in July 2015 to present. Data is uploaded annually. The University's energy benchmarking is part of St. Louis City's engagement with the City Energy Project, which requires all buildings over 50,000 SF to report energy use beginning in CY2017. Due to our commitment to benchmarking, we reported energy use for all buildings on our Danforth Campus, regardless of size, beginning 18 months prior to the mandatory start date of January 2017.

A brief description of the water management or benchmarking program:

Washington University participates in national building water use benchmarking through Energy STAR Portfolio Manager. Washington University has uploaded water use data for our two main campuses for calendar year 2017. Data will be uploaded annually moving forward.

While we do not have the same spacial or temporal data granularity for water that we have for energy, water benchmarking has been very valuable for monitoring the impacts of water conservation efforts. Recent efforts include low flow fixture replacements (including a full replacement of shower heads in all residential halls in 2017), irrigation efficiency through weather- and moisture-controls and more efficient sprinkler heads, and the installation of multiple heat-recovery chillers, which use less evaporative cooling.

In addition, the University requires that all new buildings and major renovations include building-level water meters to improve data granularity.
