UNITED WAY (WashU Engage)
Washington University Human Resources partners with the Gephardt Institute for Civic and Community Engagement in an effort to create a more meaningful and impactful WashU United Way Campaign, giving employees the opportunity to connect with each other and hundreds of local organizations that need help. https://source.wustl.edu/2016/09/employees-invited-support-united-way-community-service/
Volunteers can sign up with a group of colleagues, or as an individual through the United Way’s Volunteer Center. As an added incentive, from October 1 to November 30, the university matches up to a half of the volunteer service hours for one instance.
GEPHARDT INSTITUTE FOR CIVIC AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
The Gephardt Institute’s Civic Engagement Fund cultivates community engagement initiatives that strengthen communities. Through St. Louis Projects Grants, Community-Engaged Teaching Grants, Common Ground Grants, Small Change Grants, and Need-Based Grants, all members of the WashU community may request funding and support for their proposed initiatives.
5 Grant Categories are Available:
- St. Louis Projects Grants for substantial initiatives in the St. Louis region with clearly defined community partnerships (Up to $5,000)
- Community-Engaged Teaching Grants (faculty only) support faculty with community-engaged courses and initiatives (Up to $5,000)
- Common Ground Grants for developing strategies to repair, address, and prevent polarization at Washington University and in the St. Louis community (Up to $1,000)
- Small Change Grants for community projects, special events, and educational experiences (Up to $500)
- Need-Based Grants (students only) for students with high financial need (Up to $250)

In an effort to support student engagement in local community service, the Gephardt Institute offers a transportation subsidy through the CarShare Fund to assist students who face financial barriers to paying for transportation costs and do not have personal vehicles. The CarShare Fund also supports student groups, faculty, and staff that do not have access to enough personal vehicles.
