A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
As of January 2009, Washington University in St. Louis is the first university in North America to have banned the sale of bottled water in campus administrative offices, dining services and vending machines. Additionally, its distribution during departmental and university events is banned. The only exception to the ban is at Commencement, where complexities related to the number of outside parties made banning water bottles extremely difficult. Instead, bottled water usage was reduced by two-thirds.
