Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Offsetting 100% of campus Electricty Consumption
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
Over the last several years W&L has been engaged in an effort to develop a solar project that would match 100% of our campus electricity consumption, and in June 2023 we finally saw those many years of hard work come to fruition when the offsite array we partnered to build became operational. With 11MG of capacity, the array is projected to match annual campus consumption, putting solar electricity into our regional power grid in amounts equal to or greater than our campus use. The project, executed as a PPA with developers SE1, was carefully designed to ensure maximize sustainability benefits, including location, siting, community approval, and even environmentally friendly landscape management practices, like employing local sheep and goats to maintain the vegetation below panel level. Our agreement with SE1 includes collaboration for educational purposes, and we look forward to incorporating the array – both as a case study for large scale solar development and as tool for studying mechanical and financial performance – in our academic programs.
