A brief description of how sustainability is included prominently in new student orientation :
There are five categories of pre-orientation trips available to incoming first-year students: Appalachian Adventure, Archaeology, Freedom Ride, Volunteer Venture, and Sustainability.
Three of the trip categories are directly related to sustainability: two Sustainability trips (addressing all three pillars of sustainability), Volunteer Venture (addressing social and economic sustainability) and Appalachian Adventure (addressing ecological sustainability).
Every first-year also does a "Perspectives" tour of the campus that includes a stop at the Office of Sustainability, where students learn about campus sustainability goals and initiatives and how they can be involved.
Incoming Law students are invited to join volunteer shifts in the campus garden and learn about both sustainable food production and the campus compost operations.
