Residential Advisors
A brief description of the student educators program (1st program):
Residential and Community Advisors in all campus residences are contractually engaged to "support sustainability initiatives to reduce waste, recycle, and conserve energy." The Office of Sustainability partners with the Office of Residential Life to train all the advisors in these key areas of practical sustainable living and to support and/or run various initiatives throughout the year. These include orienting all new residents to sustainable living tips and expectations; administering the Winter Break Energy Checklist program, collaborating on energy reduction competitions between dorms, educating about and supporting recycling and composting in the campus residences, and collaborating on low-waste move-out programs. While these students perform residence life work year round, and that includes addressing sustainability operations issues as they arise, the specific, focused work is concentrated during two weeks in the fall term, two weeks in the winter term, and three weeks in the spring term, centered on key initiatives related to Move-In, Holiday Break Energy Conservation, Spring energy reduction challenges and spring Move-out, for a total of seven weeks with a specific sustainability focus.

A brief description of the student educators program (3rd program):
The Office of Sustainability oversees a 1/2 acre campus garden which serves as a production space for growing fresh produce for campus dining, the student food pantry, and local hunger assistance programs; a demonstration space for sustainable growing practices; and a host space for student garden plots. Campus Garden Interns are trained in both the concepts and operations of sustainable gardening by the Campus Garden Manager, a member of the Office of Sustainability staff. In addition to working in the garden themselves they, 1) train other students who will supervise work in the garden, namely volunteers with the Campus Kitchen Program which grows produce for local area hunger reduction programs, and 2) lead three garden volunteer shifts a week, instructing peers in both the why and how of sustainable gardening.
