Name of the institution’s featured sustainability program, initiative, or accomplishment:
Campus Garden - compost program circular initiative

A brief description of the institution’s featured program, initiative, or accomplishment:

We have a closed-loop process with our food waste collection efforts and Campus Garden. We collect food waste from every dining facility and major event on campus, which is taken to our aerated static pile compost system. After being processed there, the finished compost is used to grow produce in our Campus Garden, which is purchased by University Dining. A portion of the produce also goes to Campus Kitchen and the local food bank. This program is a partnership between the Offices of Sustainability and Energy Education, Dining, University Facilities, the Biology department, and our student-run Compost Crew.

Submeters and energy dashboard, in conjunction with PowerDown Challenge

A brief description of the second program/initiative/accomplishment:

One of our upper-division housing options, called The Village, has townhouses and apartments that are submetered. These submeters are connected to a Lucid energy dashboard, called the Power Trip (https://go.wlu.edu/powertrip). We have used this combination of technologies to run energy reduction challenges in The Village, which is home to roughly 340 students. The winners of the contest got a pizza party and a visit with dogs.

Name of a third highlighted program/initiative/accomplishment:
Department-specific Climate Action Plan initiatives

A brief description of the third program/initiative/accomplishment:

Under its Education and Engagement Initiatives, the 2019 Climate Action Plan lists department-specific work. "Workshops and custom training courses, possibly for internal certification, on department specific environmental information. For example, a series on green cleaning offered to custodial staff, sustainable office and event management practices for administrative assistant staff, sustainable landscaping for grounds staff, etc." We have met with a handful of departments with hour- to hour-and-a-half programming built to office-specific ways they can reduce their impacts on energy and waste. (Though COVID has definitely impacted this.) To date, we have met with the Communications office, Student Affairs office, Administrative Assistants group, and the custodians. We had other face-to-face trainings planned, but COVID shut most of those down. We are just starting to get additional requests - from Career and Professional Development, Outing Club and Campus Recreation, just to name a few.

Additionally, we are in the process of running a sustainability audit on the campus. Members of the University Sustainability Committee are checking in with key people in each department to gather information about knowledge/goals about the Climate Action Plan and sustainability and to see what areas of campus we need to focus more sustainability tools/resources.
