STARS v2.2

Washington and Lee University
IN-3: Bicycle Friendly University

Status Score Responsible Party
n/a 0.00 /

This credit was marked as Not Applicable for the following reason:

While W&L has not yet applied to have our university officially recognized as a bicycle-friendly campus, we do have a strong pro-bike program on-campus, the Blue Bike program: https://www.wlu.edu/outing-club/blue-bikes. The Blue Bike program at Washington and Lee is designed to provide a convenient way to get around the campus and Lexington. The use of bicycles instead of motor vehicles results in cleaner air and better health, less traffic and more open parking spaces, less oil consumed and fewer greenhouse gases emitted. Students, faculty and staff may participate in both the Free Bike and Check Out Bike Program by registering online.

W&L has also coordinated with the CSPDC (Central Shenandoah Planning District Commission) through their Bicycle and Pedestrian Program to complete the "Brushy Blue Master Plan" in 2004. This is a 16.5 mile trail running from Brushy Hill Preserve, through Lexington (and through W&L campus), Rockbridge County, and Buena Vista, then eventually connecting to the Blue Ridge Parkway. https://www.cspdc.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/BrushyBlue_GreenwayMasterPlan_WEBSITE.pdf
