CRT Help Desk

A brief description of the student educators program (1st program):

The CRT Help Desk was created in spring 2019 and continued throughout the school year. Trained sustainability student interns had a table set up in our on-campus dining venues during heavy traffic dining hours to assist and educate other students about how to properly sort their waste after dining, specifically helping students understand our dining venues switch to compostable ware and why it should be composted rather than recycled.
Our student interns have previous training in waste minimization and sorting through "trash tent" events and waste audits during our weekly intern meetings.

The target audience for the CRT Help Desk are all undergrad students using our on-campus dining venues.

Sustainable Cooking Classes

A brief description of the student educators program (2nd program):

We have a student-led sustainable cooking class program. This program started in the 2019-2020 school year and has expanded over the years to include other offices into the mix.

We started with "Seasonal Suppers" three times a year during the different growing seasons in Virginia to help students understand what is in season, where they can get fresh local food in/around Rockbridge County, and how to cook with these different foods. At the end of the student-instructed cooking class, everyone shares the meal. These classes are held at the Sustainability Theme House.

Another part of this program is "Sustainable Cooking Classes". Students teach other students sustainable cooking tips and skills. These tips specifically focus on food waste reduction for example teaching students easy, safe preserving techniques like how to freeze vegetables before the go bad to avoid throwing them away.

Currently, we merged the two different events into one general "sustainable cooking class series" that happens a few times a year and addresses different issues related to sustainable food systems, agriculture, and cooking.

The programs are open to the whole student body. We had to cap the in person cooking classes to 12 per session, but during the 2020-2021 year the cooking classes went virtual and were capturing a larger audience of students and staff.

Waste Reduction Trainings for First Year Students

A brief description of the student educators program (3rd program):

This program was created during the 2020-2021 school year when we started collection compost in addition to recycling from the first year dorms (due to the increase in compostable to-go ware being used on campus). The staff in our office coordinated and scheduled Zoom training sessions with the students on each different floor in both first year dorms and had student interns lead a presentation/discussion/Q&A for those students about waste reduction, and how and where to compost and recycle.
