A brief description of how the institution ensures that its lowest-paid workers (including contractors, if applicable) receive sustainable compensation:
o Washington and Lee pays a minimum of $9.46 to all benefit eligible support staff. This is well above Virginia’s minimum wage, ensuring that W&L is a desirable employer for lower-skilled workers. In addition, W&L ensures that the lowest-paid workers do not pay more than 10% of their income on health insurance; they subsidize it if this is the case. W&L lacks an official definition of sustainability in its compensation policies, but it has all the components of a sustainable pay policy by making sure that the lowest-paid workers are paid adequately as compared with other jobs they could get in the region.
