Has the institution assessed attitudes about diversity and equity on campus in a way that meets the criteria for this credit?:
Yes

A brief description of the assessment(s):

The University Committee on Inclusiveness and Campus Climate (UCICC) reports to the president and is charged to produce an annual report on our campus climate, especially with respect to inclusiveness and diversity, that charts the University's progress on key longitudinal measures. The following is from the executive summary of the 2010 UCICC report: “The UCICC was created by President Ruscio in November of 2008. Since then we have met roughly once a month during the regular academic year and discussed a wide variety of issues. This report does not include a complete list of our activities; it does not mention a number of questions that we continue to study. Instead, the report focuses on three subjects: measurements of diversity at Washington and Lee; analysis of gender responses to the ModernThink survey conducted last spring; and brief summaries of recommendations submitted to President Ruscio.” The committee also administers a campus climate survey every three years. In the off years, we participate in the Chronicle of Higher Education survey and Great Colleges to Work For survey, both of which address issues of diversity.

A brief description of how the results of the assessment(s) are used in shaping policy, programs, and initiatives:

In addition to creating an annual report, UCICC is charged with the following:
• advise the president on matters related to inclusiveness and campus climate;
• address from time to time particular issues of concern, such as gender or racial relations across campus, through focused study and analysis, and make recommendations to the President for further action by appropriate University officials, committees or administrative bodies; and
• provide an institutional platform to address issues of inclusiveness and diversity, in response to concerns within the campus community.

For example, UCICC is currently considering a proposal from a consulting firm to conduct a year-long diversity training to foster an inclusive climate on campus.
