A brief description of the native plant program, policy, or practice:

The 2010 Campus Master Plan is intended to provide landscape, architectural design, vision, and guidance to address the thoughtful and necessary renovation of the central campus. Guidelines for plant selection are as follows: New plantings should enhance the existing character, natural beauty, and habitat resources of the campus. Existing plantings should be respected and preserved in areas of new development. Preference should be given to genus/species that are native to Virginia. Adapted genus/species that possess similar characteristics to the indigenous plant community are acceptable in contained and ornamental settings. Highly and Moderately invasive species designated by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation should be prohibited. All planting should strive to contribute to the sustainability of the campus through reducing maintenance and mowing where possible, minimizing irrigation, and/or benefiting water quality and habitat.
