A brief description of how sustainability is included prominently in new student orientation (including how multiple dimensions of sustainability are addressed):

All incoming and transfer undergraduate students are greeted by Office of Sustainability staff and interns on move-in day. All new undergraduate students receive a reusable tote for recycling and information about alternative transportation on campus, including Zipcar. During the most recent orientation, the Office of Sustainability conducted our "Choose to Reuse" outreach, educating students on the benefits of using a reusable water bottle instead of a disposable one and providing them with a free bottle adorned with the campaign logo.

Orientation also includes a variety of events that address multiple dimensions of sustainability. These include opportunities focused on wellbeing, such as Mindful Mornings, where students learn how to help achieve academic and personal wellness, and Wellbeing at Wake, where students learn skills to navigate the campus landscape. Project Wake is a discussion-based event centered on the summer reading (which often has strong ties to sustainability). Finally, there is a Service Open House, where students can learn about the service and social action programs and opportunities available to them. These include many projects on which the Office of Sustainability collaborates, including Campus Kitchen and alternative spring break trips.

Sustainability has a presence during graduate student orientations as well. Staff from the Office of Sustainability table at the School of Business Involvement Fair at the beginning of each year to introduce new students to the intersection of sustainability and business and explain how they can get involved. A similar initiative occurs at the School of Divinity Involvement Fair, where staff from Sustainability Graduate Programs and the Office of Sustainability discuss the joint degree program offered and other ways to get involved. Needless to say, new students in the Sustainability MA program address sustainability-related issues in all they do.
