Does the institution advocate for national, state/provincial, or local public policies that support campus sustainability or that otherwise advance sustainability?:
Yes

A brief description of how the institution engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability, including the issues, legislation, and ordinances for or against which the institution has advocated:

The university continues to work with local authorities to advocate for increased access to, and safety for, bicycle and pedestrian routes in Winston-Salem. In 2014/15, we partnered with the City/County Planning Department on a study of the two-mile perimeter surrounding campus. The study resulted in five recommendations for improvements that would enhance safety and accessibility for bicycle, pedestrian, and transit commuters. The first recommendation was included in the city's capital planning budget request to the DOT. The partnership serves as a model that the planning department will deploy with other campuses in our area.
