The vision of the Environmental Sustainability Council (ESC) is for Virginia Wesleyan University to be a model of environmental stewardship through education and community engagement. The ESC strives to achieve this by promoting a strong environmental ethic and cultivating sustainable policies, practices and curricula in keeping with the University’s liberal arts tradition and institutional commitment to social responsibility and ethical conduct.

Yes, the Environmental Sustainability Council and Director of Sustainability in the past three years have:
- maintained Model Level status in the Elizabeth River Project’s River Star Business program
- overseen annual reports and activities in support of the university's Climate Leadership Commitment, which integrates carbon neutrality with climate resilience and provides a systems approach to mitigating and adapting to a changing climate
- overseen participation in the Chesapeake Oyster Alliance partnership, a coalition dedicated to helping recover the Bay’s oyster populations
- coordinated participation in the Campus Race to Zero Waste recycling and waste reduction competition
- organized the annual Earth Week celebration, which includes education events on campus
- implemented and managed the Virginia Wesleyan University Sustainability Leaders graduation distinction

The Director of Sustainability oversees campus sustainability projects including the Climate Commitment reporting requirements for greenhouse gas emissions reductions and resilience, the Campus Race to Zero Waste, and AASHE STARS. The Director also chairs the Environmental Sustainability Council and supervises student sustainability projects.
