The university offers study away courses focused on sustainability and environmental issues. These courses have included the following:
HON 200: Environmental and Cultural Sustainability in Alaska/ENVS 283 Seminar in Alaska (2022 and 2019):
This unique interdisciplinary course focuses on the distinctive and dramatic landscape of Southeast Alaska to illustrate the interconnectedness between the major forces that have shaped our planet and how its inhabitants live their lives. The emphasis of this course is to foster students’ awareness of complex relationships that exist throughout the natural world and how they interact to have economic, social, cultural, and philosophical implications.
HON 200: Diversity and Sustainability (2022):
This course examines issues of diversity and sustainability in one of the most geographically, biologically, culturally and ethnically diverse nations in the world, Ecuador. Students will explore how Ecuador manages to balance conservation of environmental and cultural diversity with economic development by engaging with local non-governmental organizations and local communities; learning about conservation projects and sustainable practices; and participating in cultural exchanges.
The university also offers internship courses focused on environmental studies every semester for both traditional day and online students:
ENVS 470: Internship in Environmental Studies
An intensive study of the environment through on-site field experience. Placements involve hands-on experiences such as education, grassroots activism, public policy, and habitat management.
