Virginia Tech has been planning for a transition to EVs, specifically by planning for EV charging station locations and coordinating with our local utility (Virginia Tech Electric Service) on power requirements. We recently applied for a federal grant for this effort. We believe that having a sufficient amount of charging stations is imperative to encouraging the purchase of more EVs.
We’re also working to update our policies to require a total cost of ownership (TCO) calculation before purchasing a vehicle. This calculation would compare the TCO of an internal combustion engine vehicle to that of an EV. If the EV is cheaper, it will be required to purchase it. This will only apply to light-duty vehicles, and law enforcement and other emergency response vehicles will be exempt.
