Does the institution have an on-site child care facility, partner with a local facility, and/or provide subsidies or financial support to help meet the child care needs of students, faculty, and staff?:
Yes
A brief description of the child care program, policy, or practice:
Virginia Tech has an on-site child care center, as well as a partnership with a local daycare facility.
The Virginia Tech Child Development Center for Learning and Research, part of the Department of Human Development, provides care for 42 children from 16 months through pre-school, as well as serving as a training and research facility. In its eighth year as a full-day, full-year program, the center originated in the 1940’s and is accredited by the National Association for Young Children (NAEYC), an honor achieved by only 7% of programs nationwide.
To meet the growing demand for high-quality and affordable child care services for its employees, Virginia Tech, the Virginia Tech Foundation, and the Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center has renewed agreements with Rainbow Riders Childcare Center of Blacksburg that continues to expand child care services in the community and guarantee some of the new slots to families of Virginia Tech employees, employees of Corporate Research Center companies, and employees of university-related corporations.
Under the terms of this renewal agreement, the university pays the child care provider $100,000 annually (using private funds from the Virginia Tech Foundation) for five years. Under the agreement, 60 percent of the Rainbow Riders Childcare Centers’ slots will be guaranteed for children of Virginia Tech faculty, staff, and graduate students.
