OP-T2-42: Move-In Waste Reduction

Associate Director of Building Services & Grounds
Does the institution have a program to reduce residence hall move-in waste?:
A brief description of the program:
During student move-in several steps are taken to enhance sustainable practices. Additional cardboard recycling sites are set up at various locations within the residence areas. Cardboard pick-ups at previously established sites are serviced more often to accommodate the increase in material during student move-in. Additional containers for recyclable beverage containers are placed at strategic locations within the residence areas to encourage recycling instead of simply trashing the containers. Guards are posted in numerous areas to prevent turf and tree damage related to the increase in vehicular traffic during this time, aiding the reduction of erosion and loss of tree/plant life. An increased number of solid waste containers are staged throughout the residence areas and are compacted at different intervals during the day to reduce the number of times the containers have to be pulled and taken to the transfer station which reduces vehicle emissions. Electric vehicles (trucks) will be incorporated into our fleet for future move-in activities which will further reduce our emissions for student move-in.
