A brief description of on-site renewable electricity generating devices :

A 100kWpeak dc solar photovoltaic system was installed on top of the campus’ newest parking garage and put in operation in May, 2012. From data collected over the period 7/14/12 through 12/31/12, the solar array generated 60,615 kWh, or 206.8 MMBtu’s of renewable electricity.

Virginia Tech has an on-campus coal / natural gas / fuel oil fired central power plant that produces 600 psig steam which is reduced to utilization pressures via a 6.25 MW turbine-generator; the turbine-generator produces less than 5% of total campus total energy needs (MMBtu’s)
